Amazon’s Smart Thermostat Is $58 — And That’s The Most Dangerous Thing About It
I’ll tell you what I hate: smart home devices that make your life less smart. A thermostat that requires an engineering degree to install, a subscription to function, and a data center in China to stay warm at night. That’s not innovation. That’s a hostage situation.
So when I saw Amazon’s Smart Thermostat on sale for $58 — down from $80 — I paid attention. Not because it’s cheap. Because it’s simple.
Here’s what you need to know: This thing works with Alexa. It learns your schedule. It adjusts itself. It saves you money. The usual checklist. But what makes it interesting is what Amazon didn’t do. They didn’t add a screen you’ll never look at. They didn’t force you into a monthly fee. They didn’t make it require a professional installer. It’s a white circle with a display that shows temperature. That’s it.
And that’s the point.
Most tech companies can’t stop themselves. They add features until the product becomes a mess. A thermostat that also plays music. A lock that also takes photos. A light bulb that also tracks your sleep. It’s insanity. You end up with a product that does everything badly.
Amazon did the hard thing: they said no. They made a thermostat that’s just a thermostat. And at $58, it’s cheaper than your coffee habit for a month.
The real question isn’t whether you should buy it. It’s whether you have the courage to stop buying things that do too much.
Stay hungry. Stay foolish. Stay warm.
